May (week 2)

Our new technical advisor - Gerry Hamilton

He is now handling our project as Anura referred him to be more knowledgeable in the Structures and Designs field due to vast experience over the years. None the less, Anura was still available in the case of any problems of doubts or in the case of Gerry not being available.

Now, this is what I have learned about Truss systems in the past week.
A truss system is basically any structure that is made of triangular units that are attached to any straight component members or beams that are generally connected at the ends and are normally referred to as nodes.
A number of types of truss systems shown below

The implementation of truss systems in comparison over elongated metal components would prove to be more beneficial in terms of ability to cope under immense external forces such as stress, strain, etc.

We had a group meeting earlier on in the week, as I could not attend Wednesdays lecture as I had to attend to personal commitments. During the meeting, we picked a day that seemed good for all of us, in order to go to pick a part to acquire a number of A pillars that we could test, in order to find out stress, strain levels and point of fatigue for the material used, etc. This was to be done on the materials testing machine, under the supervision of our technical advisor - Gerry Hamilton.

Given below is a picture of a testing rig similar to the one at Unitec
