October (week 1-4)

WOOHOOOO !!!!!!!!!! the All Blacks won the rugby world cup. Great way to start our back to uni work.

Enjoyed watchig the games during the break. We were to organize a meeting as soon as we got back to uni, but the completion of the other assignments happened to intefere with it. So we called it off. Since our report is due in the next couple of days, we are to organize a meeting before it, to sit and compile the report. So far we are making progress.
None the less, we have started working on the presentation and now we are just hoping for the best.

September (week 3)

Dennis finished the Solid works design of the A pillars sometime last week. He did a really great detailed job. Pictures of the solid works pillars are given below.

September (week 1 + 2)

As mentioned earlier, the testing turned out to be a great success but it took me a while to get some pictures of it, once again taken from dennis and jasmit. Compression test pics

some of the pics are given below.

It was pretty exciting to see the test up close, as it was a great first time experence. The computer values are very accurate and will be compared to the Solid works designs that are still currently being designed.

It was amazing as this was one of the big accomplishments in our project and finally all that planning actually worked out to be perfect. Very glad that I have a great team , and a well experienced tech advisor - Gerry.

given below now are some of the graphs obtained from the computer, that show the fatigue points of both the compression tests.

 GRAPH A
GRAPH B

Graph A shows the test results when the A pillar was placed lying down on the rig.
A picture below will illustrate it.
Calculations proved that a force of 1.22 kN was acted upon it to deflect it by 40mm.

Graph B was the results of a test to prove the compression and fatigue point on the A pillar from external forces that were acted on the top and bottom of the pillar.

It was placed on the rig as shown in the picture

Calculations proved that a force of 24.45 kN was acted upon it to deflect it by 11mm.

Test A was done to provide fatigue value in the case of side impact.
Test B was done to provide fatigue values in the case of frontal impact.

August (week 4)

We finally did it !!!!!!!!!!! the compression tests that is !!!

Finally got to use the materials testing rig, under supervision of Gerry Hamilton, our technical advisor. Took us a while to get the program running on the computer, and switching parts for the different tests we had to conduct.

Given below is a video of one of the compression tests we conducted on the test rig.

August (week 3)

We made quite a bit of progress last week, as we managed to weld some bases on to each side of the A pillars. Since Jasmit was the only one with experience behind him, we decided for him to weld the plates on to the A pillar. Gerry came in to check on us on a regular basis, and to make sure we were not burning the roof down, and to guide us in the case of us doing anything wrong.

On the other hand Dennis was helping Jasmit, whilst I was assigned to sawing o and angle grinding the edges of the A pillars, so that they could be welded on right. Gerry also informed us to try solid works, a program that we could use to design A pillars, which could then be simulated later on to show the class in our presentation.

Here are some pictures of the welding and there are some more pics on Jasmit's blog and Dennis's blog.

August (week 2)

Our first meeting for our second semester. It seemed more of a catch up at first, but starting getting down to business shortly after. Since we missed out on alot, we decided that we had to work harder. Coming to think about it, we did not do anything during the break. This pushed us to work extra hard in the next couple of weeks.
We planned on welding some mounts on to the ends of the A pillars, so that they could be easily placed on the testing rig for support as we required them to sit straight in order to minimize error on our results. Met up with Gerry and booked the welding room for friday the 12, and were going to take it from there.

August (week 1)

A great break I enjoyed back home in Doha, followed by a trip to Melbourne and Brisbane. Did not want to leave, but back to the grind it had to be. Back to uni after so long felt weird and wrong.

Went to class for a little while, and was reminded of the dates of submission and presentations. It seemed so far away, but when busy it will pass by so soon. We did not have a group meeting this week however as one of our members were still away.
