Confirmed topic - Modification of the A pillar to decrease/ eliminate blindspot
Course advisor assigned – Anura B
After a number of meetings with our technical advisor Anura, we expanded our knowledge on the Structures and Designs of the A pillars.
During our meetings a number of questions did arise as how we were going to manage in the reduction of the size of the A pillars, whilst maintaining all the objectives they are meant to provide in aspects of safety during collision, etc. We tackled a few topics that had come up and pooled in solutions for various problems including using alternate materials that would provide a higher tolerance on stress and strain, however, this lead to more problems like costs, material availability – whether it was easily available, etc. One of the best solutions was given to us by Dennis Cheang. His solution was to introduce truss systems into the structure of the A pillar designs. Since I had a little to no knowledge on the topic, I decided to look into some information on truss systems.
Anura also brought up whether we were all capable of dealing with such a difficult task, as it would require a lot of time and effort in order to complete such a task. We all assured him that we were capable of putting in the hours and effort into this topic and so our journey began.
Here are pictures of some random A pillars/ blind spots
Below is the A pillar designed in truss system.
